The seventh round of the MCE British Superbike Championship opened up to perfect racing conditions – and it was a fantastic result for the Buildbase BMW team.
Returning to the 2.4 mile Brands Hatch circuit during the first weekend of August, Lee Jackson and his team mate Richard Cooper lined up in 7th and 8th positions following a superb qualifying time on Saturday, with both riders making it through to the Superpole. While big name rivals like Shane Byrne and Leon Haslam battled at the front of the pack in race one, Jackson dug deep on the surface and had a clean 20-lap run. Coming into the finish line at 29.26.765, the number 14 rider took fifth position – his best placement this season.
By the start of race two, Jackson and Cooper once again lined up side by side in 10th and 11th, fourth row on the grid. While the second race was almost a clean run, by lap 18 an incident occurred on track and resulted in the deployment of the safety car, with the addition of two laps. And it worked in Buildbase BMW team’s favour with both Jackson and Cooper able to move fluidly through the racing pack, leaving the number 14 rider to secure a big 6th finish.
Jackson said: “This weekend has been my strongest so far, setting a good pace on Friday and – having worked on the set up during Friday and Saturday – it put me in good stead for qualifying on Saturday. I made it through to my first Superpole and I was happy to start race 1 in 7th place.
“Race one didn’t quite start as I wanted, but I was ready to fight my way through and I managed to cross the line in 5th, having been down in 11th on lap one. By race two I was feeling more confident and comfier with the pace, so I was looking for a good start from 10th on the grid.”
He added: “Unfortunately my start again was average and I kept getting blocked in. But habit settled down and, as I made more head way, I was feeling good. With 10 laps to go I had made my way through to 8th from 14th. Though with 4 laps to go the safety car came out and this helped massively as it meant Richard and I could push on, and we both made 2 passes on the last lap to finish the race in 6th place.”
Jackson gained a big points boost following his success at Brands Hatch and leaves him in 13th position overall with 65 total points to his name. The eighth round of the MCE British Superbike Championship takes place at Cadwell Park on August 27 – 29.
